Bladder Diary Guide

What is a Bladder Diary?

A bladder diary(voiding diary) is a simple chart where you track your fluid intake, urination, urgency and any accidental urine leakage throughout the day and night. This diary helps healthcare professionals understand your bladder habits, diagnose urinary problems, and monitor treatment progress.

  • Record the times you urinate during the day and the times you wake up at night to urinate

  • Record the times, amounts, and types of fluids you drink over 24 hours

  • Record your urine volume (amount of urine passed) each time you urinate and whether you experienced leaks

  • Add comments you think are important

Starting with Your Morning Wake-Up

  • Use the diary for the duration your doctor recommends and bring it to your next appointment.

  • For accuracy, record each urination and fluid intake as it happens.

  • Start each 24-hour cycle with your morning wake-up and first urination.

For example, if you get up at 7 a.m. the first day, fill out your diary until 7 a.m. the next day.

Tip for Measuring Urine Volume!

Use a graduated cup or container to measure your urine output.

You can also use the capacity of a disposable coffee cup as a reference.

  • Starbucks : Short 8oz, Tall 12oz, Grande 16oz

  • Philz Coffee : Short 12oz, Medium 16oz, Large 20oz

How to Fill Out the Diary?

1. TIME

Record the time you urinated. Make sure to also note the time you woke up and went to sleep.

ex. 7:30 wake up

2. DRINK

Record the type and amount of fluids consumed.

ex. Orange juice, 8oz

3. URINATION

When you urinate, use a measuring jug to record the amount (in oz or mL).

Also, note the time and mark your urgency level using this scale:

  • 0 : No urgency

  • 1 : Felt urgency but could tolerate it

  • 3 : Urgent need to reach the toilet, interrupting your activity

4. LEAKAGE

If you leaked urine before reaching the toilet, mark the level in the column.

  • Small – A few drops of urine

  • Medium – Wet underwear

  • Large – Wet outerwear or leakage onto the floor

*Note any activity that caused leakage, like coughing, sneezing, hearing running water.

Also, record any special issues, medication changes, or general notes about your day.

If paper diaries are a hassle, Bladderly's here for you anytime!

Keeping track of every bathroom visit can be tedious, and many people forget or give up due to the inconvenience. A study by the LURN network found that fewer than half of 1,064 participants completed a three-day bladder diary.

The biggest challenge? Measuring urine output—especially for women. Younger participants also often missed key details like timing and nocturia. Despite these challenges, bladder diaries are essential for diagnosing and managing urinary conditions, making accuracy crucial. Bladderly makes tracking effortless and thorough—turning it into a seamless part of your routine. Join us today!

It is generally recommended to keep a bladder diary for 3 to 7 days. If long-term monitoring or treatment evaluation is needed, your doctor may recommend keeping the diary for a longer period. Download Bladderly App Download on the App Store Get it on Google Play
  • How Many Times Should You Record Per Day?
Record every urination. On average, healthy adults urinate 5-8 times a day, but it can vary with lifestyle and fluid intake. In addition to recording the time and amount of urine, it’s important to note: Urgency: Did you feel a strong, sudden need to urinate? Nighttime urination: Did you wake up to urinate? For the most accurate results, maintain your usual daily routine and record your natural urination patterns. Keeping track of your fluid intake alongside your urination can also help analyze the relationship between hydration and bladder patterns. • How can I measure urine volume accurately?
For accurate measurement, please follow these steps: 1. Reduce background noise Measure in a quiet bathroom. The quieter the environment, the more accurate the AI analysis will be. 2. Avoid blocking the smartphone’s microphone Be careful not to cover the microphone. Also, do not place your phone in your pocket. 3. Do not use other apps with the microphone If you're on a call or using another recording app, the measurement won’t work. 4. Adjust the phone’s position (for male users) Place your phone about 1 meter from the toilet. If it’s too close or too far, the sound may be distorted, reducing accuracy. By following these guidelines, you can measure urine volume more accurately. 😊

No, Bladderly only detects sound while using the sound input feature. It does not record or listen to your voice or any background sounds at any other time. 🔇
  • Can I use "Sound Input" with Bluetooth earphones?
When Bluetooth earphones are connected, the microphone may not work properly, which prevents sound-based urine volume analysis. To use the sound input feature, please disconnect your Bluetooth earphones.
  • I wear hearing aids—can I still use "Sound Input"?
Some hearing aids may interfere with the microphone, affecting the accuracy of the urine volume measurement. For the best results, please turn off your hearing aids while using the sound input feature.
  • Can I use "Sound Input" without internet access?
Yes, you can record urination sounds without an internet connection. When you press the "Sound Input" button, the sound will be recorded in the app. Once your device is connected to the internet, the urine volume will be automatically calculated and added to the app.
  • I’m using an Android phone, but the sound input result isn’t showing up.
Android phones can vary in microphone quality and audio systems depending on the manufacturer, which may cause the sound input feature to not work correctly on some devices. If you need further help, feel free to reach out to our support team at hello@bladderly.com.
  • Can I use Bladderly on a Motorola device?
Bladderly isn’t currently available for Motorola devices. The audio processing on Motorola phones differs, preventing the sound input feature from working properly. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding of this limitation.

The following devices support "Sound Input" for automatic urine volume measurement: iPhone Models: - All models from iPhone 8 and above - Includes the iPhone 16 series (16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, 16e) Android Phone Models: - Most Android devices are supported - Motorola devices are not supported 💡Note: While "Sound Input" works on most recent devices, some models may have reduced accuracy.
